A hospice worker / nurse helping a hospice patient sitting in a chair looking out a window - Safety Tips for In-Home Hospice Caregivers - Northern Illinois Hospice

Caring for someone in hospice care is a meaningful role that comes with its own unique set of responsibilities. While every caregiver and hospice journey looks different, keeping your loved one safe is a top priority for all caregivers.

Taking a few precautions and keeping these safety tips in mind can help you create a safe and comforting environment for you and your loved one. In this blog, we’re sharing some tips to help you navigate your role as a caregiver during this time.

Tips for creating a safe in-home environment

Creating a safe space in your loved one’s home can help them feel more comfortable in their environment. Here are some tips to help prevent falls.

Keep mobility aids close by to help prevent falls

Keeping mobility aids within reach makes it easier for your loved one to use them when getting up. This can help them feel more steady and confident while they move around.

Remove any items that may be a tripping hazard

Creating a safe space for your loved one to move around comfortably can help prevent them from falling or tripping. Loose rugs and cords on the floor may create a tripping hazard for them. Adding additional lighting, such as night lights or lamps, can help them see better. Making minor changes to their space can help your loved one move around independently and confidently.

Install grab bars in the bathroom to make the room more accessible

Adding grab bars gives your loved one something to hold onto while they’re in the bathroom. It’s a safe way for them to use the restroom independently with added stability.

Taking steps to reduce fall risks at home can make moving around feel safer and more manageable for your loved one.

Tips for handling your loved one’s medical care

Since every hospice journey looks different, your loved one may be on certain medications or need certain medical supplies like an oxygen tank. Keeping these tips in mind can bring you peace of mind while participating in your loved one’s care.

Keep an eye out for potential side effects of medications

As your loved one’s needs evolve, so does their care. As a caregiver, being present and attentive while your loved one is taking medications or using medical equipment can help you better support their safety. If you notice any side effects, you can talk to your loved one’s team to help determine the next best steps.

Use pill organizers to help you keep track of medications

If your loved one is taking medications, using a pill organizer can make it easier to keep everything in order. It can serve as a helpful daily reminder, giving you peace of mind their medications are being taken at the right time and make your daily routine feel more manageable.

Collaborate and communicate with your loved one’s care team

If you ever have any questions or concerns about your loved one, need resources, or want additional emotional or physical support, their care team is always available to offer assistance. Keeping an open line of communication helps ensure your loved one receives the care they deserve.

Staying up to date and being hands-on with your loved one’s care can help ensure their personalized care plan continues to honor their personal wishes.

Tips for caregiver safety

While being a primary caregiver is a meaningful role, it can be challenging and emotionally taxing at times. There are resources available to you that can help you work through these feelings, so you can make the most of your time with your loved one. Here are some tips to keep yourself safe while caring for them.

Know whom to call in the event of an emergency

While your loved one is receiving home hospice care, their comfort is the top priority. Your care team should give you information on who to call in the event of an emergency. Most hospice patients want to receive comfort care without excessive interventions. Your loved one’s hospice care team can help determine the best ways to support your loved one in an emergency while honoring their wishes.

Store all important documents in a safe space

Having all of your loved one’s important documents organized and stored in a safe spot allows you to access them whenever you need. Keep your loved one’s legal documents and the hospice team’s contact information readily available.

Remember to take care of yourself

Don’t let the emotional challenges of being a caregiver make you feel overwhelmed all the time. Your hospice team can provide valuable resources for bereavement services, respite care, spiritual services, and more. When you feel well-rested and emotionally supported, it’s easier to focus on your loved one and continue providing the compassionate care they deserve.

Taking care of yourself and using the resources available to you can help you be the best caregiver for your loved one while spending meaningful time together.
