How Starting Hospice Care Sooner Benefits Caregivers

While being a caregiver for a loved one with a life-limiting illness can be rewarding, it can also feel physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausting. Many caregivers may feel like they have to handle everything on their own, but hospice is designed to provide ongoing support for patients and their families. Having your loved one begin hospice isn’t an easy decision to make, but starting sooner allows you and your loved one more time to take advantage of hospice services.
In this blog, we’re covering how starting hospice sooner can help caregivers feel more confident, avoid burnout, and benefit from emotional support.
Hospice offers education and guidance for caregivers
One of the biggest benefits of starting hospice care sooner is the opportunity to learn how to best support your loved one. Most people become caregivers without having any formal medical training, so it can feel difficult to manage your loved one’s care.
While you don’t need to be an expert, hospice can provide additional education and guidance to help you feel more confident in your role as a caregiver. Hospice has helpful resources to guide you throughout your unique hospice journey. At Northern Illinois Hospice, we offer hands-on education and training, along with virtual resources in our Reading Room. You can learn about safety, medication management, and much more.
Our Reading Room is a special place where anyone can learn and grow in their understanding of hospice and palliative care. These resources are available to you anytime and anywhere. It’s like having a whole library with the touch of a button. With dozens of articles and helpful how-to videos in both English and Spanish, the Reading Room can serve as a helpful guide.
The sooner you choose hospice, the sooner you can receive additional education, guidance, and support that can help you navigate the challenges of being a caregiver.
Hospice can help reduce caregiver burnout
Another benefit of starting hospice sooner rather than later is that it can help caregivers experiencing burnout. If you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed, it’s understandable. As a hospice provider, we offer supportive services that can help share responsibilities, so you have time for yourself without worrying about your loved one’s care.
Nurses, medical social workers, certified nursing assistants, spiritual counselors, volunteers, and other members of your care team each offer different services to meet your individual needs while still caring for your loved one. Our volunteer program can connect you with compassionate individuals who want to help care for your loved one. Volunteers can offer companionship or assist with small tasks around the house.
Having additional help around the house can help you rest, recharge, and focus on your own emotional well-being, so you can continue being the best caregiver you can be.
Hospice provides emotional support during and after hospice
Receiving emotional support during and after hospice is another benefit of starting care sooner. In addition to the education and guidance hospice provides caring for your loved one, we also offer emotional support. Our staff are trained to listen and support you.
Our grief and bereavement support groups offer caregivers and family members a safe space to work through their grief journey. We know everyone’s experience with grief is different, which is why we offer a variety of support options, including one-on-one and groups. Many families find comfort in sharing personal experiences with others and receiving guidance from experienced professionals.
These bereavement services are available to Northern Illinois Hospice families at no additional cost for 13 months after your loved one passes away.
Starting hospice sooner gives you more time to build relationships with your hospice team, connect with others facing similar challenges, and take advantage of the resources we offer.
